- Thesis: public and private language relate to the issue of bilingual education because of the impact it can have on someone's learning process; such as making he or she have a hard time accepting the dominant language as their primary language, and thinking in English while having it as a second can make someone's thinking process slower.
Bilingual education is defined as a English language school system in which students are able to get their education in both their native language and English. When we think of it, being bilingual is a privilege that some of us have as it will allow you to communicate with others that shares the same language, but when you live in America, getting your education in English is favorable because everything out there is in English; whether it is written or auditory information being able to assimilate English is mandatory. For example, if you have French as a second language what can you really do with it; therefore, learning in English would prevent you from being lost, According to Richard RodrÃguez,'' My own sound I was unable to hear, but I knew I was speaking English.'' From this statement he means he can't understand anything he is pretty much lost in trying to understand the language.
On the other hand when you know a second language which in the case of Richard Rodriguez was Spanish trying to process information in English without thinking of your own language is more difficult; you cannot simply overwrite a language in your brain; through time you will lose most abilities you had from your first language, so learning in English can prevent you from embarrassment like if someone say something simple and you do not understand you might have trouble accomplishing what you wanted. In the passage, the author claims that he would listen to sounds more than to words.
The author associate that in order to have separateness individuality is a must because it separates us from the crowd, it makes people feel unique in his case he felt more comfortable speaking his own language at home because he knows he will be understood by all his peers; while outside he feels obligated to abide to English
To conclude even though there might be an advantage to bilingual education it still wont be in someone's favor due to the problem it might create to someone's processing thought and being able to think only in English
